Grandma Perry

I awoke with a start to find
That grandma was gone.
I glanced out the window and
Saw her walking toward the barn.

The years had been hard on her.
The wind and sun had weathered her skin.
Her mountain living had bent her
But she was still strong from within.

She was proud,
As proud as she could be.
She was my only friend,
The only light for me.

I bounded down the stairs
And ran through the door.
Because when I was with her,
I was afraid no more.

I didn’t know her when she was young,
But, I imagined her strength.
I could hear her song.
In my eyes, she could do no wrong.

All she had now were the cows to milk
And the chickens to feed.
But, I had her,
That’s all I could need.

All she ever asked from me was my love.
All I ever asked from her was for her to be.
She went away too quickly
But, she’ll be in my spirit, within me.
