The Cupped Wrist Theory of Golf
I’ve discovered the secret to the golf swing. I’m letting the secret out so that you may profit from it if you wish. I hereby hand you this wisdom for free.
It’s all in the cupping of the wrists.
Going back, you need to keep the left wrist straight while gradually cupping the right wrist until it is completely collapsed at the top. When the hands reach the top of the backswing, they will be at ear level, the palm of the right hand will be parallel to the ground and completely cupped, and the left wrist will be straight.
On the downswing, the left wrist will remain straight until after contact, then gradually collapse until it is completely cupped at the top of the forward swing. The right wrist will gradually straighten until it is at the same position at impact as it was at address.
After impact, the right wrist will tend toward the straight position and then remain that way until the end of the swing.
The key to this idea is this: On the backswing, the left forearm and hand tend to move in the horizontal direction while the right forearm and hand tend to move up in the vertical direction, even though it appears that the hands are moving in a plane created by the angle of attack of the club shaft at address.
On the downswing through impact, the right forearm and hand will tend to move down in the vertical direction and the left forearm and hand will tend to move in the horizontal direction.
After impact, the left forearm and hand will move gradually upward in the vertical direction while the right forearm and hand will tend to move horizontally.
When the hands reach the end of the swing, they will be at ear level, the palm of the left hand will be completely cupped and parallel to the ground, and the right wrist will be straight.
I have developed this method so that one need not worry about the shoulder turn or the movement of the legs during the swing. If one uses my technique, he only needs to concentrate on the movement of the arms and hands. The shoulders and legs will move in response to the movement of the arms and hands.
If you think that these concepts have any merit, give them a try. I’ve retired from golf ball striking, so I cannot test my own theories.
